The Joker's appearance in the film is gloomy and terrifying, with his face painted white and his lips scarlet, giving him a grotesque clown-like appearance. He wears a purple outfit and wields a knife. The Joker's actions throughout the film are intended to test Batman and the city's police force, and he eventually targets Gotham's newly elected district attorney, Harvey Dent, in an attempt to corrupt him and turn him against Batman.
The trailer for "The Dark Knight" includes several classic sequences of the Joker mocking Batman, setting off explosions, and spreading mayhem on Gotham's streets. The trailer concludes with the Joker ominously declaring, "Why so serious?" - a remark that has become one of the film's most iconic.
